The obscene gender pay gap at the Wimbledon tennis championships

A piece published on the website of Justice for Men & Boys (and the women who love them), the political party of which I’m the chairman, in July 2019:

Since 2007, the prize money for men and women at the Wimbledon tennis championships has been the same. In truth, the women’s game has since then been a parasite on the men’s game:

    • the men’s game attracts far more money in broadcasting rights and ticket sales
    • women play a maximum of only three sets, compared with men playing a maximum of five sets

This year the men’s and the women’s singles title winners landed £2.35 million prize money.

Yesterday Simona Halep beat Serena Williams 6:2, 6:2, in just 56 minutes. A total of 16 games.

This afternoon, I returned from campaigning at Speakers’ Corner to catch the exciting final set of the Djokovic / Federer final, which Djokovic won following a tie-break in the final set. He won the match 7:6, 1:6, 7:6, 4:6, 13:12. A total of 68 games, more than four times as many as in the women’s final. The game was (just) the longest in Wimbledon history, at four hours and 57 minutes, more than five times longer than the women’s final.

Equal pay for such unequal effort and audience interest is nothing short of obscene.
