Our thanks to Ian for this. Let’s be honest about women’s football, shall we? It’s all but unwatchable to anyone but lesbian feminists, as the poor attendances at matches demonstrate. You’d witness a superior quality of match with teams composed of 12-year-old boys.

The most exciting goal I ever saw in women’s football was a spectacular goal in an international game, a year or two ago. It was an own goal, but never mind. One lesson the government has drawn is predictable. There is a pressing ‘need’ for more women on the board of the FA.

In the interest of gender equality we should no longer have gendered teams, but teams inclusive of both sexes, with individual players selected on merit alone. That would make the professional game permanently 100% male.

In January 2013, the month before J4MB launched, I appeared on the national edition of Daily Politics, the only time I’ve been invited on it (though I’ve had a few appearances on regional editions since). I was there to talk about the issue of ‘women on boards’, and opposing me was Heather Rabbatts, a non-executive director of the FA.

The video (11:06) is here. At 10:00 I asked why we don’t see women campaigning for 50% of lorry drivers to be female. Rabbatts seemed taken aback by the question, and on the way out of the studio, she hissed, ‘Lorry drivers – that was a low blow!’ I smiled and said, ‘Thanks, I’ve got hundreds of them!’ She glared at me and stomped out of the room. It’s a happy memory.
